Back pain can be the result of many problems including, sprained ligaments, strained muscles, rupture disks, and irritated joints. While accidents or sports injuries can cause back pain, sometimes the simplest of movements, such as putting on your shoes, can have painful results. In addition, arthritis, poor posture, obesity, and psychological stress can cause or complicate back pain. Back pain can also be caused from diseases of the internal organs, such as kidney stones, kidney infections, blood clots, or bone loss.

Manipulation as a Treatment for Back Problems

Manipulation has been used primarily by Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) for the last century. Today, with the growing emphasis on treatment and cost effectiveness, manipulation is receiving more widespread attention.

In an extensive study of all currently available care for low back problems performed by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, a federal government research organization, recommended spinal manipulation as the only safe and effective, drugless form of initial professional treatment for acute low back problems in adults.

Supporting and Supplemental Therapies

In addition to manipulation, other therapies such as massage, trigger point therapy, and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation help to relax muscles and increase joint mobility. In addition, exercises are commonly prescribed to patients suffering from low back pain. These exercises are designed to rehabilitate the soft tissues and enhance the muscles ability to stabilize and protect the spine from injury.

A variety of physical therapy modalities may also be employed and include hot and cold applications, muscle stimulation, interferential therapy, therapeutic ultrasound, diathermy, and cold laser therapy.

Diet and nutrition play a key role in the health of the spine as without the proper nutrients, the spine and rest of the body are less able to remain healthy. This impacts the healing response once tissues have been injured. If your diet and nutritional status is poor, we can help get you on track.
